League members win National event!
For the second year running the team
of Paul Davison (Washington CC), Dave Guttridge (The Bene), Dave
Lowther (Byker PTE) and Eddie Burns (former league player), have won
the HASSRA National Sports Quiz.
After winning in Bristol in 2005,
representing HASSRA Newcastle, there had been a re-jig of the National
boundaries, meaning that in 2006 the team was representing the North
East region which covers from Berwick in the North to Teeside in the
South.
After winning a regional qualifier at
the Angel Inn in Gateshead, the team went to Darlington to do battle
with teams representing another 11 other regions of the country, at
the quiz held at the Blackwell Grange Hotel. The quiz was set by
another League stalwart, Steve Westerby.
The team got a spectacular start,
scoring 24 out of 32 points to lead by 6 points at the end of Round 1.
That lead had stretched to 25 points by the lunch break, a lead never
likely to be clawed back
When time was called after 12 rounds
of questions, The North East team had scored a total of 202 points out
of a possible 250, leaving them victors by 49 points from their
friends and rivals from Burnley, who represented the North West
region.
