Challenge Cup 2008

This year the Challenge Cup continues on a regionalised basis, with the second round and quarter finals being held on a single night in the 4 regional venues.

The four quarter final winners advance to the League semi-final and Final night.

Northumberland Group (at Whitley Bay Conservative Club):        Morpeth Harriers, The Bene, The Wolsy and Whitley Bay.

Newcastle Group (at Byker Key Club): Byker Key Club, Byker PTE, East End Lib Club, and East End Nomads.

Gateshead/Sunderland Group (at Philadelphia Cricket Club): Blaydon RFC, Mount Pleasant, Philadelphia CC and Saltwell SC. 

Durham Group (at Leeholme Club): Britannia, Kirk Merrington, Leeholme,  and Old Shildon.

The winners of the 2008 KO Cup are Old Shildon.

In the semi finals they defeated East End Nomads, who almost snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with a 15-2 run in Round 8. The other semi final was also decided in the last round with The Bene recovering a deficit with a 14-5 run.

In the final the last round again proved decisive, as The Bene were only 1.5 points back on handicap, but Martin Robinson and his team held on to take the title.

Congratulations to the Old Shildon team, and also many thanks to the St Teresas team, who set the quizzes for both the regional heats and the semi finals and finals. Excellent work chaps.
