North East Sports Quiz League Rules
SECTION A:- GENERAL RULES
1. All Teams must enter League,
KO Cup & Challenge Cup. The League shall run any extra competition they deem
suitable each year, rules and format to be decided by the Committee.
2. The League shall be run by a
committee consisting of: Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Publicity
Secretary, Question Compilers and two representatives from each division.
3. Composition of the league:
towards the end of the season, teams will be contacted to confirm their
commitment for the following season - this must be given by the end of May.
New applicants must apply in writing to the Secretary and their application
will be considered at the AGM. In view of possible resignations or new
applications, the committee will propose to the AGM the composition of
divisions for the coming season. The league will operate a one-up, one-down
promotion and relegation system unless withdrawals make other adjustments
necessary.
4 (a) League positions are
decided on points won; in the event of a tie involving promotion or
relegation, positions will be decided on the average match points over the
season. If positions are still unresolved a play-off between the teams
involved shall take place.
(b) All fixtures of any team
dropping out of the League during the course of a season shall be deleted.
(c) Any postponed matches must
be re-arranged prior to 31st May.
5. Each team shall pay an
affiliation fee decided by the committee to be paid by the end of May. New
teams shall pay at the AGM. The committee reserves the right to refuse entry
to any team to the League for non-fulfilment of fixtures) in previous
seasons.
6. Any team may offer a home
venue of suitable standard at the AGM.
7. A player can represent only
one team per season.
8. Each team has one vote at
the AGM. The Officers of the League also have an individual vote (Secretary,
Publicity Secretary, Treasurer). The Chairman has a casting vote.
9. Nominations for the League
committee must be sent to the Secretary, in writing by the end of May.
Nominations at the AGM will only be accepted in exceptional circumstances at
the Chairman's discretion.
10. Any proposed changes or
amendments to these rules must be made to the Secretary in writing by the
end of April in order to be considered at the AGM.
11. Trophies must be returned
to the Secretary by the end of May.
SECTION B:- THE QUIZ
1. Teams shall consist of four
persons. In the event of an emergency teams shall be allowed to play with a
minimum of two persons.
2. The quiz shall consist of
eight rounds of which rounds 1, 2, 7 & 8 shall be team rounds consisting of
14 questions, 2 each of Athletics, Boxing, Football, Cricket & Horse Racing
plus 4 general sports questions.
Round 3 shall be an individual
round of 8 questions comprising one each of Athletics, Boxing, Football,
Cricket & Horse Racing plus 3 general sports questions. Team members shall
select a number between 1-8 to decide the question asked them.
Round 4 shall be a written
round. Points are awarded on the following basis: 4 points to the winning
team if the margin is three points or more. If the margin is two or less,
three points to the winning team and one to the losing team. In the event of
a tie, teams shall receive two points each. The time duration of the
question shall be decided by the question setter.
Round 5 shall be a written
round of 7 questions, comprising one each of Athletics, Boxing, Football,
Cricket & Horse Racing plus 2 general sports questions. A written answer
must be handed in to the question master within 30 seconds of the question
master completing each question. Scoring will be two points for a correct
answer.
Round 6 shall be an individual
round of 8 questions, comprising one each of Athletics, Boxing, Football,
Cricket & Horse Racing plus 3 general sports questions. The Question Master
will reveal the subjects of the General Sports question prior to the
commencement of the round. Starting with the 'home team', the Team captains
will alternately select a subject and then nominate a player to receive that
question. The opposing Team captain will nominate a player to receive the
question being answered incorrectly. Each player can only be nominated for a
question once, and for a bonus once, during the round.
All questions can be passed to
opponents for a bonus point, except in rounds 4 & 5.
In certain
questions first names may be required and this shall be specified by the
question-setter. If no first name is asked for by the question-setter, any
first name given in the answer shall be ignored and not taken into account
by the by the question-master. In matters of dispute Rule 10 shall apply.
3. Teams shall be asked
questions alternately, except in rounds 4 & 5 where each shall receive the
same question.
4. Spare questions shall be
provided.
5. Points scoring: 2 for a
correct answer, 1 for a bonus, except as rule 2 for rounds 4 & 5.
6. Time allowed for questions
shall be 30 seconds with 10 for a bonus, except as rule 2 for rounds 4 & 5.
7. Match scoring: two points
for a win, one for a draw.
8. Quiz to start between 8.15pm
and 8.30pm.
9. The date of the quiz can be
changed in
only one circumstance: this being
that a team shall request to the Committee to play a fixture on a different
night. If the Committee and the opposing team agree, the date shall be
changed. Any re-arranged match must be played before the next round of
fixtures in that particular division.
10. The question master runs
the quiz and his decision is final in all matters.
The home team is responsible for sending
the match result to the secretary.
11.
In the
event of a team not fulfilling a fixture an automatic two-point fine shall
be imposed, unless exceptional circumstances cause the Committee to decide
otherwise. The offending teams average score shall be determined by the
number of matches played including the fixture, while the non-offending
teams average shall be determined by the number of matches played not
including the fixture.
SECTION C:- OTHER
COMPETITIONS.
C1. Singles and Pairs.
The League will run Singles and Pairs competitions every year. These will
be Open Singles, Open Pairs, Division B singles, Division B pairs and
Division C singles and Pairs.
In Singles competitions, the Open competition can be contested by players
from any Division. Divisional competitions shall be contested by players of
the specific Division. Players from the lower Divisions may take part in the
Open competition and their own divisional competition.
In Pairs competitions, the Open competition can be contested by pairs of
players from any Division. Lower Divisional competitions shall be contested
by players of the specific Division. Entry to the competition shall be made
by a named pair. A player may take part in the competition if their partner
does not turn up on the Qualification night, but must specify who their
partner should be, in the event of their qualification. Substitutions, prior
to Finals night, will not be allowed, under any circumstances.
Lower Division pairs may take part in the Open competition and their
own Divisional competition.
C2. KO Cup.
The Knockout Cup is a handicap competition, open to all the teams in the
League, and which is held on Finals Night. The quiz will be a table quiz.
The handicap and format will be arranged by the committee.
In the event of two or more teams aggregating the same score, the team with
the lowest handicap is the winner.
C3. The Challenge Cup.
The Challenge Cup is a knock out handicap competition, and is based upon a
full quiz, as specified at Section B above. The handicap and format will be
arranged by the committee.
C4. The Handicap Leagues.
The
Handicap League is a handicap competition based upon league fixtures. Teams
carry forward their handicap at the beginning of each season. A win in a
handicap match decreases the team's handicap by two, whilst a defeat
increases it by two. League placing is decided by average scores. In the
case of promoted/relegated teams, a handicapper appointed by the Committee
shall set the handicap at the beginning of the season.
