Three long standing members of the North East Sports Quiz League, Dave Morrison, Paul  Davison and Mike Sowerby appeared on the 2008 BBC2 programme 'Sport Mastermind'.

 Dave appeared on the second heat to be shown and his specialist subject was 'The Ashes  1981'. In a very close heat Dave triumphed with an excellent score of 32, with the second  and third placed competitors scoring 31, and 30 respectively.

 Paul appeared on the programme shown on BBC2 on Tuesday 15th July at 8pm. His  specialist subject was 'The life and career of Lennox Lewis'. After the two rounds of  questions Paul had scored 28 points and won his heat by 6 points.

 Mike's heat was screened on Wednesday 30th July, at 7.30pm. Mike's specialist subject was  'Desert Orchid' and he scored an excellent 19 points on the famous grey horse. He then  went on to total 30 points and win the heat by one point.

 All three qualified for the six man final, which was shown on BBC2, on Wednesday 20th  August.

 Mike was the second contestant to go in the final. He scored 15 points on his specialist  subject 'Superleague' (Rugby League).

 Paul was the fourth contestant and he scored 16 points on his specialist subject 'The Tampa  Bay Buccaneers.

 Dave went last of the six finalists and scored 14 on his specialist subject 'The Champion  Hurdle since 1968'.

 At the end of Round 1 the scores were:-

 Dave Morrison 14, Luke Arnold 15, Mike Sowerby 15, Patricia Arthurs 16, Paul Davison 16  and Chris Bell 16.

 Dave went first in Round 2 on general sports and came storming back with 14 points to total  28. Mike and Luke both scored 8 to make 23, Patricia and Paul both scored 10 to make 26,  but Chris Bell of Billericay stormed through to take the Sports Mastermind title scoring 16 to  total 32 and win by 4 points.

 Final positions:

 1st Chris Bell  - 32

 2nd Dave Morrison - 28

 3rd (joint) Paul Davison & Patricia Arthurs - 26

 5th (joint) Mike Sowerby & Luke Arnold - 23 points.
